On behalf of the Board of Directors of Friends of Callawassie Island, Inc. (FOCI), I warmly welcome you to our website. We hope our site will help you to learn about FOCI, provide easy access to our grant application process and, lastly, make it easy to contribute to FOCI.
In 2001, a group of Callawassie Island residents, seeking to support neighboring community programs in a meaningful philanthropic way, formed Friends of Callawassie Island, Inc. and we celebrated our 15th anniversary this past year in 2016. During all of these years, I can proudly say that FOCI has always remained true to its mission of “seeking to enrich the lives of people living in Beaufort and Jasper Counties by providing financial support to worthy not-for-profit charitable organizations who serve the needs of disadvantaged and/or underserved individuals in these communities.”
Non-profit organizations requesting financial support are asked to complete and submit a detailed grant request application. The FOCI Board exercises due diligence in evaluating the request to ensure that the group’s goals and its’ purpose for the grant are linked to FOCI’s mission. Grant requests are reviewed on a quarterly basis.
Through the years, many worthy organizations that provide direct assistance in the areas of youth education/recreation, health and human services (e.g., child care, children/women shelters, programs for seniors) hunger, literacy, housing, and other expanded social services have been the beneficiaries of FOCI grant awards. Many of our Callawassie Island residents also volunteer their time to support the work of these Lowcountry charitable organizations.
FOCI raises the funds it distributes through individual donations and major fund raising events. In March 2015, we held our biennial Charity Yard sale at the Beaufort County Comprehensive Health Center which was a huge success and our next one is coming up on March 25, 2017 at the same place. The 2016 edition of the FOCI Charity Golf Tournament, which took place on a warm and sunny Saturday just weeks after Hurricane Matthew was another successful fundraiser raising over $36,000 for local charities. Over three nights in February 2016 in our Clubhouse “theater” FOCI raised over $10,000 for Lowcountry charities when The CAllawassie Players staged the musical comedy-mystery And Then There Were…Not Many. Financial support from our many sponsors and the continued support from our community for our fundraising events are greatly appreciated! And we take pride in knowing that we donate one hundred percent of the net funds we raise to the programs we support.
During the calendar year 2016, FOCI granted $57,706 to 22 individual charities in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Since our inception, Friends of Callawassie Island has granted nearly $600,000 to needy and worthy local charities and organizations.
It is a privilege for me to serve as President of FOCI along with the other dedicated FOCI Board members, caring Callawassie residents, and other supporters. If you are not involved with FOCI in some way, please consider it in the coming year.
Thank you for all you do and we look forward to hearing from you!
